Getting Started: biosignalsplux

You’ve recently received your new biosignalsplux and can’t wait to get started? Then this is the right article for you!

Congratulations on acquiring your newest research companion and find below everything you need to know about your biosignalsplux.

Your biosignalsplux Kit

We offer multiple versions of biosignalsplux kit (you can see all the options here) but you should find the following options in your kit:

If you purchased a biosignalsplux Professional kit, you will also find the following things:

Your biosignalsplux Hub

Your biosignalsplux hub comes with 4- or 8-channels which allow you to record data from multiple biosignalsplux sensors simultaneously. The hub comes also with additional peripherals.

4-Channel Hubs

4-Channel hubs are part of the biosignalsplux Explorer and the FNIRS Explorer kits and come with the following peripherals:

  • A center button to turn the device on & off
  • 4x sensor ports (green)
  • 1x reference port to connect a common reference & digital sensors as the FNIRS sensor (yellow)

Connect your sensors to any of the available ports, turn on your device, and you’re ready to record some signals.

8-Channel Hubs

8-Channel hubs are part of the biosignalsplux Researcher and the biosignalsplux Professional kits and come with the following peripherals:

  • A center button to turn the device on & off
  • 8x sensor ports (green)
  • 1x reference port to connect a common reference & digital sensors as the FNIRS sensor (yellow)
  • 1x accessory port (e.g. trigger button) (red)

Connect your sensors to any of the available ports, turn on your device, and you’re ready to record some signals.

Connecting your biosignalsplux your PC

Before installing our OpenSignals software, we recommend connecting your device’s Bluetooth dongle and to install the right drivers (Windows only).

Although this process if often automated by Windows, your computer might sometimes pick incompatible drivers that may lead to Bluetooth complications down the road.

We recommend following these articles at this step:

  1. How to configure & Enable the Bluetooth Dongle (Windows)
  2. How can I pair my PLUX device with my computer?

Getting Started with OpenSignals

OpenSignals is our free signal acquisition, visualization, and data export software which is available for all of our kits.

Download OpenSignals and install it by following the instructions of the installer and proceed with the instructions below to conduct your first signal acquisition.

Add & Configure Your Device to OpenSignals

Turn on your biosignalsplux hub by pressing its center button (the button should start blinking) and connect all your sensors to your hub.

In OpenSignals, enter the device manager by clicking the button highlighted below.

OpenSignals will automatically search for available device and add your device once found. I you had all your sensors connected to the hub before this step, OpenSignals will automatically setup your device.

You can change all device settings by clicking on the device panel of your device in the device manager and changing the settings of your choice.

The example below shows a typical device manager with a connected 8-channel hub and 3 connected sensors (EMG to channel 1, ECG to channel 2, and EDA to channel 3).

Before exiting the device manager, make sure that the ENABLE button is blue as this means that the device is active for signal acquisitions. You can click on the button to de-activate the device, if needed (the button turns grey).

Record Your First Signals

Enter the signal acquisition mode by clicking on the red record button in the OpenSignals main interface.

OpenSignals will connect to your device and initiate the acquisition. Once started, you’ll see your recorded signals in real-time on your computer screen.

You can exit the acquisition mode by clicking on the stop button (the square) at the bottom right of you screen.

OpenSignals offers a variety of different features that are available during the signal acquisition.

We recommend reading further articles in our support page and the OpenSignals User Manual for detailed information about all available features and how to use them.

Visualize Your First Signals

After the acquisition, enter the signal visualization acquisition mode by clicking on the red record button in the OpenSignals main interface.

This mode allows you to visualize previously recorded signals with OpenSignals. OpenSignals will automatically open the latest acquisition but you can open other acquisition files by clicking on the folder icon 📁 and opening the file of your choice.

Signal acquisitions conducted with OpenSignals can be stored in the .TXT, .H5, and .EDF file formats and can be shared with third-party applications.

We recommend the following article which highlights the file content structure and available metadata:

OpenSignals offers a variety of different features that are available during the signal visualization mode including post-processing signal add-ons.
